9 Rightsizing Tips for Eliminating Clutter

Organized CabinetIf you’re getting ready to move, downsizing or simply trying to eliminate some of the clutter, here are 9 good tips to help you get started.

  1. Start with the easy stuff.
Eliminate anything that is broken, damaged or no longer wanted.
  2. Ask yourself, “If this disappears tomorrow, would I run out and replace it?”
If the answer is no, then don’t keep it.
  3. Don’t be a storage unit for others.
  4. Ask for help.
A family member, friend or professional organizer can make the job more manageable.
  5.  Decide what is really important.
If you had limited space to store items and the cost of storing additional items was prohibitive, what would you keep? This is what is important to you.
  6. Is this something from a lifestyle you no longer have or want?
For instance, enough plastic food containers for a family of 4 is too many for a family of 2.
  7. Schedule a regular time – weekly – to work on rightsizing.
It took time to accumulate all the items and it will take time to sort it all out. Also, don’t work “overtime” on your rightsizing. This could lead to you losing interest in the project.
  8. Value what you keep.
Plan on displaying the items you keep. Possibly on a rotating schedule.
  9.  Prevent new collections from forming.
Instead of material items ask for items such as experiences you would not normally purchase for yourself.
